About this Project
Brief Project Description & Background
In today’s world of global supply chains, the manufacturing of goods is increasingly spread out throughout the world. This ever widening supply chain has placed increased demands for freight movement across the country. Coincidently in the United States, this has created new opportunities for the railroad industry to compete with the trucking industry for long haul operations. Key to much of the railroad growth is the strategic expansion of rail-truck intermodal facilities. In the realm of safety, these facilities reduce the number of long haul truck trips, at the expense of concentrating trucks into a single area, and increasing rail traffic at at-grade crossings along the tracks. This research seeks to understand the operational and safety impacts of intermodal facilities on transportation networks shared by the surrounding community
The objective is to investigate the impacts of the intermodal rail-truck facility in Gardner, Kansas on the surrounding community.
