Certificates and Programs
Superpave Field Laboratory Technician Certification Training
Superpave Field Laboratory Technician Certification Training is a four-day course offered jointly by Kansas State University and the Kansas Department of Transportation several times annually. This course allows engineers, technicians and other personnel who will be involved in the construction of Superpave Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements using Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QC/QA) specifications in the state of Kansas to become certified. Superpave (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) represents an improved system for specifying asphalt binders and mineral aggregates, developing asphalt mixture design, and analyzing and establishing pavement performance prediction.
Successful completion of the course and certification (subjected to a combined passing score on two written tests and a laboratory proficiency test given at the end of the course) is required for all KDOT and contractor personnel performing tests on the Superpave projects. In 2010 alone, 66 participants from KDOT, HMA industry and consulting companies attended the training. MATC Associate Director Dr. Mustaque Hossain coordinates the program.
Transportation Certificate Program
The Kansas State University Transportation Engineering Graduate Certificate Program is a 12 credit hour fully online program that provides transportation professionals with the opportunity to expand knowledge and skills through graduate study. This convenient program is less extensive than a traditional master's program. Professionals can pursue a focused collection of courses that allows professionals to receive recognition for continued efforts in the area of transportation engineering. Graduate certificate courses may apply towards pursuit of a traditional MS degree. Some of the distance courses offered through this program include Traffic Engineering I, Pavement Design, Portland Cement Concrete Pavements, Transportation Safety, and Land Development for Civil Engineers.
This program is sponsored by MATC and the Kansas State University Transportation Center. For more information, please visit: http://www.dce.k-state.edu/engineering/certificates/transportation/
Transportation Leadership Graduate Certificate Program
The Transportation Leadership Graduate Certificate (TLGC) is a national post-baccalaureate program of excellence, sponsored by regional university transportation centers including MATC. The TLGC program is offered online for working transportation professionals who want to expand their transportation knowledge and earn graduate-level credit. TLGC courses are taught by expert faculty at some of the nation's top institutions of higher education. After completing the 12 credit (four course) program, participants receive a certificate that is recognized by public and private sector industry leaders.
Program chairman Dr. Denver Tolliver of North Dakota State University and Dr. Martin Pietrucha of Pennsylvania State University, curriculum committee chairman, have been awarded the Institute of Transportation Engineers' 2011 Innovation in Education award for this program.
