Lesson Overview

Lesson Title:
Off Road Math

Mrs. Stephanie Brandyberry (Primary)

Brief Description:
The lesson teaches students about an important characteristic of lines: their slope. Slope can be determined either in graphical or algebraic form. Slope can also be described as positive, negative, zero, or undefined. Students get an explanation of when and how these different types of slope occur. Finally, students learn how slope relates to parallel and perpendicular lines. When two lines are parallel, they have the same slope and when they are perpendicular their slopes are negative reciprocals of one another.

Topics Introduced:
slope, gradient, equations of lines

Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics Curriculum Framework Components Addressed:
Transportation Operations
Suggested Grade Levels:
9th Grade
10th Grade
11th Grade
12th Grade

Standards Taught:
8.1.2 Math 2006
8.2.3 Math 2006
8.5.2 Math 2006
8.6.1 Math 2006
8.6.3 Math 2006

Lesson Information

Learning Expectations:

Students will learn how to find slope of lines using several different methods.

Plan Of Action:

• Give students the warm-up worksheet.

• Show video "Slope of Ramps, Part I."

• In-class discussion on slope.

•Slope Powerpoint.

• Homework on Slope.

Data Set Used:

Used Math Matters: Off Road Algebra

Materials Needed:

computer, worksheets, projector

Video: Problem 9

Preparation Period:

1-2 hours

Implementation Period:

First semester of Algebra or Algebra 2 when reviewing and discussing slope.

Will probably take 2 days, but could be completed in 1.

Science, Math, Engineering and / or Technology Implications:

Because many important engineering applications can be better described by a graph of their lines, students need to understand important characteristics of those lines. One of the most descriptive characteristics of a line is its slope, so students need to know about this aspect of lines.
