Introduction to Technologies used in Geoscience

Lesson Information

Learning Expectations:

Students are expected to learn about five different remote sensing technologies. Students should be able to explain the uses and differences between each type of technology. Students will have a basic understanding of how to use a hand held GPS unit.

Plan Of Action:

Plan on implementing the lesson at the start of the semester.
1. You will need to determine what information you need to present to your students based on your objectives and grade level. I presented the Ch.1.3 Technology documented attached. I had the students take notes using the Earth Science Tech document attached. Allow 15-20 minutes.
2. Allow about 15-20 minutes for completion of the five questions on the Earth Science Tech document. I use this as 50% of my formative assessment.
3. Do the GPS activity and allow about 40 minutes. You will need to break the students into several groups (depending on number of GPS units).
4. You will need to give a short introduction lesson on how to use the GPS units and Way Points.
5. Take the students outside and have them complete the GPS activity worksheet. I use this for the remaining 50% of my formative assessment.
6. Return to the classroom and go over the GPS Activity. Discuss anything you feel needs to be addressed.

Data Set Used:

No particular data set required.

Materials Needed:

You will need 8-12 GPS units to implement the lesson.

Preparation Period:

You will need to set out items or bags (containing the the phrases) to be found during the activity part of the lesson. You will need to set the Way Point for each item in each GPS unit. Setting the way points is unique to each type of GPS unit. You will need to read your GPS users manual to become familiar with setting way points. This should be done the day before or the morning of the lesson and takes about 1 hour.

Implementation Period:

This lesson takes about 1.5 hours to implement.

This lesson introduces students to remote sensing technologies and there use in Geoscience.
