This lesson plan goes over the two types of energy (potential and kinetic), the six simple machines, and 1st/2nd/3rd class levers.

Lesson Information

Learning Expectations:

To understand the difference between potential and kinetic energy, learn about the 6 types of simple machines, and understand the difference between first class, second class, and third class levers.

Plan Of Action:

Students will identify what kind of lever a catapult is, and build their own catapult.

Students can work by themselves or in teams, depending on supplies and preference. Each group will receive the following supplies: regular and jumbo craft sticks, 1 rubber band, a partial spoon, and a partial straw.

There will be a distance competition and an accuracy competition. Points for these are shown on the powerpoint.

Data Set Used:

Students will be given rules for the activity.

Materials Needed:

Per each group:
1. Regular and jumbo craft sticks
2. 1 rubber band
3. 1 partial spoon
4. 1 partial straw
5. Marshmallows (for testing)

Preparation Period:

1. Download powerpoint to computer ahead of time and look through material.
2. Have an idea how many members you want in each group.
3. Have supplies ready for groups (regular and jumbo craft sticks, rubber bands, partial spoons, partial straws, marshmallows)

Implementation Period:

Lesson will last approximately 45 minutes. Allow 10 minutes for powerpoint and questions, 20 minutes for building, 15 minutes for testing.
