Lesson Information

Learning Expectations:

To understand structural engineering, the important parts of towers, and the different ways they're built to withstand disasters.

Plan Of Action:

Students will review structural engineering and how to design buildings to withstand disasters, such as earthquakes.

Data Set Used:

Students will be given rules and supplies for this activity.

Materials Needed:

This activity requires the following for each group:
1. Craft sticks
2. Hot glue (two sticks max)
3. Tape

For everyone:
1. Shake table for testing
2. Tennis ball for testing

Preparation Period:

1. Download powerpoint to computer ahead of time and look through material.
2. Have an idea how many members you want in each group.
3. Have supplies ready for groups (craft sticks, hot glue, tape)

Implementation Period:

Lesson will last approximately 45 minutes. Allow 10 minutes for powerpoint and questions, 20 minutes for building, 15 minutes for testing.
