Lesson Title:
G-Force in Crashes

Brief Description:
Analyzing car crashes and calculating the G-Force that the driver will undertake in the crash.

Lesson Information

Learning Expectations:

  1. Students will learn to manipulate formulas and solve for different variables.

  2. Students will understand the meaning of different variables and recall these meanings

  3. Students will learn how many G's occur during a car crash and how many the human body can withstand.

Plan Of Action:

We will discuss gravity forces, G-Forces, and how that relates to force.
Students will be given a packet for worksheets.
Students will make assumptions about G-Forces and how much people people can withstand including rollercoaster G's.
Show videos of front end crashes some with the Impact Head and some without and see the difference in the damage.
Students will draw conclusions and be given the formulas for finding force.
Student will finish the worksheets and make conclusions as to how many G's the human body can take and why we have impact heads for crash barriers.

Data Set Used:


Materials Needed:

Computer:  projector, and video software

Preparation Period:

Make sure that the computer and the projector are accessible.
Load the videos, if necessary.
Have the worksheets copied and ready to pass out.

Implementation Period:

Warm up: Start day off with previously learned material.
Lesson Plan:  Show videos and work on worksheet.
Assessment:  Students complete worksheets.

Math:  Manipulating equations and solving for different values

Science:  Discussing G-force and some of Newton's Laws of physics

Considerations for Diversity in Education:

Consider more hands-on models for learners who need to move and manipulate the materials.
