Lesson Overview

Lesson Title:
Transportation Safety

Mr. Benjamin Brachle (Primary)

Brief Description:
In this lesson, students will learn about safety in transportation. They will conduct a case study of a stretch of roadway. They then will have to accurately calculate the speed of traffic, figure out the compliance ratio, and come up with some solutions to increase transportation safety on this stretch of roadway.

Topics Introduced:

Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics Curriculum Framework Components Addressed:
Transportation Systems/ Infrastructure Planning, Management and Regulation
Suggested Grade Levels:
9th Grade
10th Grade

Industrial Technology
Standards Taught:
8.3.1 Math 2006
8.3.2 Math 2006

Lesson Information

Learning Expectations:

Students will be able to accurately collect data, calculate traffic speed using a formula and a stop watch, calculate the compliance ratio of the traffic, and research and design traffic calming suggestions.

Plan Of Action:

1. Present PowerPoint ("Transportation Safety" PowerPoint below) This presentation will give background information over traffic studies and the formulas used in this lesson.
2. Present the stretch of road to the students where they will time vehicles and the landmarks used. Also provide the distance between landmarks. If unable to take students to a safe site, use the "Transportation Safety Time Instructions" video for timing instructions.
3. Journey to the predetermined data collection site, pass out stop watches and have the students collect time data. Use the "Vehicle Time Worksheet" to collect data. If unable to travel to a safe site, use the "Transportation Safety Case Study Video" to conduct data collection.
4. Once returned to class, have the students use the "Speed Conversion Worksheet" to calculate speeds and compliance ratio.
5. If a compliance issue is discovered, have the students come up with their own traffic calming solution for the given stretch of road. Give time for students to research traffic calming devices
6. Class discussion over what would be valid traffic calming solutions
7. Use the "Transportation Safety Rubric" for project evaluation.
8. EXTRA: Students will team up and create a presentation showcasing their traffic calming solutions. Also, the "Bear Tracks Civil Engineering" document will expose the students to transportation related careers. The "Transportation Video of Unsafe Biker" can be used as a bell ringer or attention getter once they have seen the "Transportation Safety" PowerPoint and know how to calculate speed.

Data Set Used:

Students will collect time data at a predetermined site. If no safe site exists, the provided video footage can be used to collect data. Footage is of a small stretch of 48th street in Omaha, Nebraska.

Materials Needed:

Stop Watches
Clip boards
Calculators (if allowed)
Computers with MS PowerPoint (or other presentation software) and Internet access
The provided documents and videos

Preparation Period:

1. Review Transportation Safety PowerPoint
2. Locate and preview data collection site. Identify landmarks and measure distance between them.
3. Locate stop watches, clip boards and calculators. Make sure they are all in working order
4. Research different traffic calming solutions for discussion
5. Review/Modify and needed the expectations and rubric for presentation assignment

Implementation Period:

This lesson will last approximately two 94 minute block class periods. Used in a Foundations of Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics course. (week 3, semester 1)

Science, Math, Engineering and / or Technology Implications:

Students will use technology and math to solve an engineering problem

Unexpected Results:

If the weather is bad, students will not be able to go outside to complete the case study.  If this event, use the video provided to conduct the study.

Considerations for Diversity in Education:

I will access Multiple Modalities and Multiple Intelligences by various activities during lesson.
