MATC’s Spring 2019 lecture series started off with a visit from the KUMC research team on driving fitness of commercial drivers. Dr. Shelley Bhattacharya, an associate professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care, introduced the project and its overall process. Dr. Abiodun Akinwuntan, the Dean of the School of Health Professions, overviewed the driving simulator, and the project coordinator Ms. Iarina Devos explained recruitment efforts. Since truck driving is the second most common occupation with over 1.7 million long-haul truck drivers, assessing their cognitive and visual fitness as well as giving them the tools to improve proposes great benefits for public safety.
