About the Program

To spark interest in transportation careers, MATC knows that efforts must begin long before students reach the university level. For this reason, MATC offers a variety of unique tours, field trips, and exciting outreach activities for K-12 students, in addition to the Summer Institute Engineering Education Excellence Experience Day and the "Roads, Rails and Race Cars" after-school club. Through these tours and activities, students learn about the importance of transportation engineering and the variety of interesting career opportunities in the field.

At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, K-12 students are regularly welcomed for tours and demos in the state-of-the art laboratories. Graduate students help facilitate hands-on activities, such as measuring traffic speeds with a LIDAR gun. In the Structural Laboratory, students are always thrilled when they see a concrete cylinder undergo a stress test and it cracks to pieces! Whatever their favorite activity may be, students always leave with a new perspective on transportation.
